On Wednesday, Jerrid Joseph Powell, aged 33, was apprehended by the police in connection to a separate incident, in which he was charged for murdering a man during a robbery in nearby San Dimas. Subsequently, the investigators were able to link Powell to the deaths of three men in Los Angeles that same week, as reported by the Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore.

At 8:30 a.m., Powell is due in court. As per the police statement released on Saturday, criminal charges are being prepared against Powell, and he is currently being detained.

The police have determined that the attacks were aimed at the most disadvantaged individuals in the city, as the suspect allegedly walked up to the men and shot them as they slept outdoors in areas around Los Angeles, which hosts one of the biggest homeless populations in the US. This burst of violence resulted in the city sending out hundreds of people to alert the homeless community that the perpetrator was still at large.

An alley was the scene of the initial homicide in the city that happened at 3 a.m. on Sunday. Another killing was reported shortly before dawn on Monday and the third occurred at 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The victims were two Hispanic men aged 37 and 52, and a Black man, 62 years old, according to police.

The homicides occurred in multiple places within Los Angeles, including an area close to Skid Row, which is notorious for its diverse homeless community.

No motive behind the homicides has been discovered by investigators yet.

On Wednesday night, Beverly Hills Police pulled over a vehicle and arrested Powell. The automobile was linked to the homicide of Nicholas Simbolon, 42, in San Dimas, which is located approximately 28 miles from Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department has charged Powell with trailing Simbolon to his house in San Dimas on Tuesday, looting the father of two in his garage and slaying him. It is not thought that Powell had any association to Simbolon.

According to the police, the car utilized by the suspect in Simbolon's demise is thought to be the same one used in the murders of the three men in Los Angeles. Moreover, a firearm discovered within the car has been linked to the three shootings through ballistic evidence.

The Beverly Hills Police Department credited their automatic license plate scanners for the arrest of Powell. Civil liberties groups like the ACLU have raised privacy concerns for this type of tech but Sheriff Robert Luna argued that they could have prevented Powell from committing more murders had they not used it.

On Friday, as police kept looking for the suspect, an outreach of over 400 personnel from the Mayor Karen Bass's office, including city departments, housing providers, and other area organizations, was sent out to alert those without homes of the potential danger.

The mayor made an appeal to citizens not to spend the night out in the open. He suggested, "Find a place to stay, look into available resources, stay with someone, and ask for help."

Bass cautioned that a murderer is targeting the homeless population.

The woman highlighted that the homeless in the city are subjected to perilous circumstances daily, with four to five individuals without a home passing away daily from a variety of reasons, including violence.
