The recently deceased former first lady, who passed away on the 19th of November at the age of 96, was remembered fondly by her family as a person with a great love of others, a brave individual, a thrill-seeker, and a "hip granny … who did Tai Chi with a sword," as her grandson, Jason Carter, shared during the memorial service held in Atlanta on Tuesday.

This week, Rosalynn's last voyage through her native Georgia extended for an approximate distance of one hundred miles. It began and concluded in Plains, the place of origin of both her and Jimmy. As people conveyed their sympathies and recalled her life and legacy, jovial laughter could be heard during the solemn events that occurred in her memory between Monday and Wednesday, with humorous stories being shared.

At the private funeral for Rosalynn Carter held on Wednesday, Pastor Tony Lowden declared that no one could be found who had a single negative thing to say about her: "Not one word. Not a news article. Not even one person on the left or anybody on the right."

Lowden commented that he believed Rosalynn's faith was the reason why she did not venerate the donkey or the elephant, but instead, revered the lamb.

This week, she was remembered in this way.

'Much like the grandmother of everyone else'

At the memorial service for Rosalynn Carter on Tuesday, her grandson Jason Carter commented that she was like a regular grandmother to all, from including mayonnaise in her recipes to sending her adult grandchildren birthday cards with $20. This occurred at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church at Emory University.

Drawing laughter from the audience, Jason declared that when he was 45, he had only a $20 bill to his name. He fondly remembered his grandmother, a practical woman who always made sure that anyone on a trip, regardless of whether they were family or strangers, would never go hungry.

Jason remembered one particular trip they had taken and shared his story, "We were all in the back of the Delta plane from here to somewhere, and as we took off, my grandma produced a Tupperware full of pimento cheese and a loaf of bread. She began to make sandwiches for us."

Jason mentioned that Rosalynn did not stop at distributing sandwiches to her grandchildren.

Consequently, our communication has been revolutionized by the ever-evolving technology.

At a tribute service paying homage to Rosalynn Carter, her family and friends spoke of how much she believed in them and how attentive she was to their needs.

On November 27th, 2023, a memorial was held in honor of Rosalynn Carter, the former first lady of the United States. The ceremony was attended by many of her family and friends, as well as many dignitaries. The memorial was a celebration of her life and her accomplishments, from her childhood to her time as first lady and beyond. Mrs. Carter was remembered for her tireless advocacy for mental health, her dedication to public service, and her unwavering commitment to her family. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

He recounted how Rosalynn Carter began handing out the sandwiches to others on the plane, with everyone in shock that the former First Lady was serving them. He added that she had a special fondness for people.

Josh Carter, her grandson, attested to the fact that she was very fond of her family, especially the little ones.

Josh Carter spoke at Wednesday's private funeral service and reminisced about how content his grandmother was when there was a new baby in the family. He recalled that she eagerly anticipated playing with them.

At the Carter Center, where my grandparents welcomed presidents and dignitaries, my mother in her 80s could be found on the floor playing peekaboo with the babies.

A person who seeks out exploration, a globetrotter, an alpinist

Josh Carter elicited chuckles from the audience as he recounted how Rosalynn Carter was not one to shy away from an adventure, as displayed by the "stunning Disney World photos" of her smiling from the top of the Tower of Terror - her favorite ride - while the Secret Service agents behind her seemed to be feeling nauseous.

Reflecting on his days as a student in the second grade at Plains High School, James Earl "Chip" Carter III remembered the fundraiser for the school in which Rosalynn took part in a game of donkey basketball. He spoke of this event on Tuesday.

He recounted that his mum had ridden her donkey as quickly as it was able to move, directly underneath the target, swivelled around so that she was facing its backside, captured the ball and scored the two points that won the match. "She was my champion that evening, and she's been my idol since then," he added.

At Glenn Memorial Church in Atlanta, Amy Carter gave a speech honoring her mother and former first lady Rosalynn Carter on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.

Jason Carter recollected his grandmother as an audacious explorer, who was a globetrotter and mountain climber. She began skiing in her sixties and kept up the activity for a further quarter of a century.

Jason recounted that Rosalynn went fishing in trout streams in far-reaching places such as Georgia, Wyoming, Venezuela, and Siberia. The adventurous lifestyle she shared with her naval officer husband granted her the opportunity to visit more than 120 countries throughout her life.

Jason described his grandmother, the former first lady, as the rock for their family, an aptitude that might have enabled her to ascend the challenging peaks of Kilimanjaro and Mt. Fuji.

Jason affirmed that she had gone to the Everest base camp in Nepal, and he was sure she was looking up at the formidable peak and wishing she could ascend it. He was certain that, considering her courage, she could have accomplished it.

An ardent proponent of mental health

In her family's view, Rosalynn has put in a lot of hard work and effort in support of reforming mental health. She and Jimmy Carter jointly established the Carter Center to carry on her commitment to destigmatizing psychological disorders.

As Jason Carter noted, "Her dedication to mental health awareness was remarkable, having begun her advocacy 50 years ago. If we consider the improved understanding of mental health in the past five years in comparison, we can truly appreciate her incredible foresight to take on the stigma of mental illness in 1970. Her work has demonstrably changed many lives, including those in his own family, and has saved many more."

At a period when dealing with psychological disorders was seen as a sign of weak character, Rosalynn worked hard to eradicate the stigma associated with it, treating it like any other medical issue which can be diagnosed and treated, according to Josh Carter.

He noted that she constructed initiatives such as campaigning for mental health equality and instructing journalists on how to cover mental illness. She viewed individuals with mental health issues as humans with aspirations and deserving of affection.

'A victor of hula dancing'

At Wednesday's funeral honoring Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, members of the Carter family wore leis in remembrance of the couple's time in Hawaii when the former president was in the Navy, according to Matthew De Galan, a spokesperson for the Carter Center.

De Galan reported that, while residing on the island, Rosalynn became an accomplished hula dancer and even took first prize in a hula dancing contest. Josh Carter proudly referred to his grandmother as a "champion hula dancer."

Chip Carter remarked that, even in her later years and while suffering from dementia, his mother was still able to show her moves.

Chip spoke of Tuesday's tribute, mentioning how his mother was with Becky, his wife, and the two were discussing her memories of life in Hawaii. She had mentioned learning the traditional dances.

He reported that she arose from the couch, moving her walker aside which she depended upon to take a step, and then she performed the hula for a few minutes.

Using her walker, she pivoted and plopped herself down onto the couch. Looking at my spouse, she proclaimed, "That's the way to go about it!"

At the Glenn Memorial Church in Atlanta on Tuesday, Judy Woodruff paused at the casket of Rosalynn Carter after delivering her speech. Woodruff spoke of the first lady's lobbying of legislators, her own separate campaigning from her husband, her presence in Cabinet meetings, and her various other roles.

'A dependable and intimate confidant'

When Judy Woodruff, a journalist, encountered Rosalynn Carter in 1970 for the first time while she was reporting on Jimmy Carter's campaign for governor, she observed how Mrs. Carter transformed the concept of a first lady.

Woodruff recounted how Rosalynn would take part in cabinet meetings and devoted herself to acquiring knowledge on matters that were significant to her.

Woodruff commented on Tuesday that the First Lady had assumed a role beyond just being an inviting host; she had become a confidant and an extension of her husband, the President.

Woodruff remembered a diplomatic journey Rosalynn took to the Caribbean, Central, and South America in the early days of the Carter presidency. She wanted to pass on her worries to Jimmy, Woodruff mentioned, especially those connected to human rights.

The journalist who was on the journey remarked that the expressions of some of the Latin leaders were unforgettable when they comprehended that they were dealing with a knowledgeable, well-prepared delegate of the President of the United States, somebody even closer to him than anyone else. Any apprehensions that she would be disregarded beforehand instantly dissipated.

Jimmy Carter's most cherished love

On Tuesday, Amy Lynn Carter, the only daughter of Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter, remarked that her mother had "spent much of her life in love" with her dad. Amy went on to say that their union and the connection they shared was a significant part of Rosalynn's life.

Amy Lynn released a letter from Jimmy Carter, now 99 years of age, which he wrote to his wife when he was serving in the Navy 75 years ago. The former President is currently unable to voice his thoughts.

Whenever I have been apart from my beloved, I am always excited to come back and be reminded of how spectacular they are.

In my absence, I attempt to convince myself that your loveliness and attractiveness could not possibly be as wonderful as I recall.

The sight of you always causes me to fall head over heels in love with you again. Does that sound peculiar to you? It doesn't to me. Adieu, my love. Until we meet again. Jimmy.
